NO buyer has been found for the former Unilever plant at Crosfields.

The base has been empty since production closed in autumn 2020.

Despite a big marketing push, no buyer has been found for the huge site.

Planning permission has been agreed to demolish the buildings but they remain in place.

The site has been used for manufacturing for more than 125 years.

Now, according to a report coming to councillors on Tuesday, a new partnership between the public and private sector will be needed.

The land could form part of grand plan to redesign Bank Quay station to become a regional transport hub for high speed rail to Manchester and Liverpool.

The report states: "Post Covid the famous Unilever plant closed after 125 years, the site blights other uses coming forward but also the sense of arrival.

"No purchaser was found following a marketing exercise and it is likely that the site will be brought forward in partnership between the public and private sector.

"The site is symbolic of a shrinking manufacturing base and a site that will require active management with central government."
