WHAT a day. What a moment. Wrexham AFC will start next season as a League One team, something that seemed like a dream not long ago.

You could feel both the nervousness and excitement around the city this morning - the whole of Wrexham was up for this game.

Before the 6-0 thrashing of Forest Green Rovers, fans were confident, albeit still a muted confidence -- they hadn't got the job done yet.

There was a calmness outside Wrexham's Racecourse stadium a few hours before kick-off, as if they were playing just another league game.

Gradually, pubs and cafes began to fill, the crowds started to swell, and the city came alive with people adorning red-and-white hats, scarves and shirts, along with Welsh flags.

It was not just another league game - Wrexham could secure back-to-back promotions for the first time in their 160-year history.

Many pubs emptied before the match, but the stadium could be heard from far away, so when Wrexham took the lead after 17 minutes, and doubled it after 23, you just knew people were already planning their celebratory night.

And not just people from Wrexham - fans from around the world were in town, with the club amassing a particularly large American following since Hollywood stars Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham AFC in 2020.

Their decision has given the city a new lease of life, all centred around the club, with so many having suffered so much over the years.

Wrexham supporters have lived through administration, promotion near-misses, and their fair share of relegation agony, but that is all forgotten.

The smiles on faces as people left the ground, the chants getting people going, and the help of red pyrotechnics - it just matters so much.

With celebrations underway, the city of Wrexham is savouring the moment.
