A FAMILY has paid tribute to an "amazing person" and successful Flintshire businessman.

Paul Bentley, from Hawarden, died on March 9, aged 70.

He was known to many for Paul Bentley Wholesale, in Buckley, which he started with his wife Sue in 1981.

Born on Mancot, Paul grew up in Shotton, later settling in Hawarden.

Son Andrew Bentley, said: "Dad had been poorly on and off and the doctors had given him five years seven or eight years ago. But he never gave anything up.

"Even towards the end he was still going and going. He gave me his work ethic, and he had a quote 'the harder I worked the luckier I got'. He didn't believe in luck, said hard work would outweigh luck every time."

Not giving up was a part of Paul. Setting up the wholesale confectionery business saw him and Sue work from 6am to the early hours of the next day most times, all while raising a family.

Andrew added: "He was just an amazing person, would always do anything for us.

"He'd raised money for North West Cancer Research and Guide Dogs for the Blind, always involved in doing something.

"People from all over, all walks of life, have said how much of a gentleman he was, and that's really stuck with me. It describes him very well."

As well as his family, Paul loved horse racing, and had an impressive collection of miniature confectionery vans, including one for Paul Bentley Wholesale, mounted in his office. A big football fan, he followed both Manchester United and Chester FC, sponsoring the latter many times over the years through his business.

A statement from the club read: "Everyone at Chester FC is saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Bentley.

"Paul was involved with the club from the very start of our journey when we reformed back in 2010. He was a hugely important sponsor to the club but also a friendly face we loved seeing in the Legends Lounge at home games on a regular basis.

"We pass on our sincerest condolences to all of Paul's family and friends. Rest in peace, Paul."
