WREXHAM has opened a new Mediterranean restaurant which has already caught people's eye - so we put it to the test.
As soon as I heard that there was a new independent Mediterranean-style restaurant on the scene, I was eager to see what the fuss was about.
'Safar', located on Chester Street, Wrexham, opened just last weekend and its menu has already caught people's attention.
Its niche cuisine gives it an edge, combining Turkish, Greek and Italian dishes.
The menu offers an array of vegetarian choices while also covering the delicious classics such as Adana kofte and chicken wing skewers, Greek chicken kebabs and chicken thigh shawarmas.
There is also a very tempting desserts and cocktails list to finish the meal off nicely, as well as a scrumptious-sounding breakfast and lunch menu available.
I visited for an early dinner on a quiet afternoon and opted for the salt and pepper calamari to start, an all-time-favourite of mine. And they did not disappoint.
The portion size was impressive for a single starter. The dish was piping hot and the fish coated in a crispy batter tasted pleasantly fresh.
For my main, I ordered the chicken thigh shawarma as I wanted to try something I knew I'd struggle to find elsewhere.
The chicken was marinated with a harmony of flavours and cooked to perfection while giving the slightest kick of spice which I enjoyed. The dish offered a very generous portion of tender meat which was placed on top of the homemade lavish bread.
It was also served alongside a fresh salad and rice which complimented the dish beautifully and I also ordered a side of truffle fries with parmesan. While I found the texture to be slightly underdone for my liking, I still enjoyed the overall flavour.
The service was incredibly quick and thorough and I felt as though I was in safe hands as soon as I was greeted by the friendly staff and owner, Arek Chelpa.

The interior is modern, stylish and incredibly comfortable. While Safar offers only 12 tables, the simple yet cosy design feels oddly familiar and inviting. A great place to visit with friends or family, on any occasion.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of dishes available, and particularly by the wonderful service by the team.
Safar offers a unique experience in Wrexham's dining market that is easily accessible and right on our doorstep.
