A teenage boxer who partially lost his sight in a training accident is to step back in the ring in just under two months time.

Charlie Foster, 19, will take part in his first bout in more than a year after recovering from a loss of vision after a freak accident last February.

It happened at Shotton Amateur Boxing Club as the Saltney teenager was sparring. He blocked a punch and his own glove came into contact with his left eye, causing immediate sight loss.

He remained blind in one eye despite numerous trips to two different hospitals to undergo tests.

A fundraising show was held at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall to raise the money needed to send Charlie for pioneering treatment at a clinic in Berlin, which specialises in neuro-opthalmology and neurology rehabilitation.

Charlie will get back into the ring when he takes part in a show at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall on May 5.

He said: “Training is going really well, I’m feeling good and I’m excited to be back in there after a year out.”

Such was Charlie’s desire to get back fighting, he was in training at Shotton ABC just days after his groundbreaking operation in the German capital.

His mum Yvonne said she was delighted to see him back.

“He’s feeling amazing, he had a follow-up here at Arrowe Park Hospital and his bad eye is now better than his good eye,” she said. “He’s having messages from all over the world too.”

She added that she wasn’t worried “in the slightest” about Charlie’s return to boxing.

She said: “I’m made up to be honest as weird as that sounds, it’s just nice seeing him doing what he loves.”

Charlie said he was just looking forward to returning to ring after such a long time away from the sport.

He added: “No nerves yet but I’m sure as it gets closer there will be.”
