THE transformation of the old Black Horse in Wrexham’s Yorke Street, not far from the Leader offices, has progressed rapidly over recent months, culminating in its opening at the end of November.

The Fat Boar Wrecsam bar and restaurant is the latest to be opened by former Wrexham AFC board members Barry Horne and Don Bircham, who last year opened the first Fat Boar in Mold’s Chester Street.

So it was in anticipation I stepped through the doors and prepared to taste the fare on offer.

The first thing that struck me was what a great job has been done in kitting the place out – inside it looks elegant and tasteful but also welcoming – not an easy balance to strike.

As for the food, it didn’t disappoint.

Choosing from the extensive menu proved difficult but eventually, I opted for the Fat Boar chilli with kidney beans, cheddar, salted tortillas, guacamole and sour cream from the Light Bites section, with a portion of hand cut chips as a side.

It’s difficult to go wrong with chilli really, but there were no complaints from me.

The dish was nicely spiced and well seasoned, and provided a warming antidote to the cold weather that awaited me outside.

The chips were well cooked, golden and crisp on the outside but fluffy and light in the middle.

As well as an enticing and vast dining menu, there is a good selection of specialty coffees, a range of real ales, an extensive wine list, cocktails and a huge list of gins, making it a decent option for an after-work pint or a few drinks in the evening.

All in all, The Fat Boar Wrecsam is a welcome addition to the town’s dining and drinking scene and certainly worth a visit.

How it rated:

  • Ambience 8/10
  • Service 8/10
  • Food quality 9/10
  • Children welcome - yes
  • Disabled access - yes
